Overview

Serious students from the Maryland, Virginia, DC areas and beyond can maximize their experience and select the Overnight Intensive Summer Intensive program where they live on campus at Sandy Spring Friends School in Sandy Spring, Maryland for the full 14 days/13 nights.

In addition to all daytime activities detailed here, Overnight Students will also mount a full production of a musical, complete with full sets, costumes, lights, choreography and stage direction at the end of their stay.

Overnight Students will participate in all Daytime Intensive activities which includes vocal, dance and acting programs for the first half of the day (see sample schedule below), and will spend their afternoons and evenings rigorously preparing for the musical performance.

Auditions and casting for the show will occur the first day of the Overnight Intensive.

In Summer 2017, the Overnight Intensive musical will be In the Heights.


Disciplines

Voice

Daily classes for all Voice Majors are designed to challenge students interested in musical theatre, classical or contemporary singing. The Voice track will consist of classes designed to propel a student forward in this competitive discipline. Classes will include: Music Theory, Voice Class, Acting and Movement for Singers.

Dance

Daily classes for all Dance Majors are designed to challenge students focused on dance. The Dance track will consist of classes designed to propel a student forward in this competitive discipline. Classes can include: Ballet, Jazz, Tap, Modern and Hip Hop.

Acting

Daily classes for all Acting Majors are designed to challenge students interested in acting. The Acting track will consist of classes designed to propel a student forward in this competitive discipline. Classes can include: Acting Games, Improvisation, Monologue Coaching. as well as Scene Study and Character Development. Students will work on both contemporary and classical audition pieces.

Placement Auditions

All students regardless of experience will be admitted to our Summer Intensives. However, auditions to best place you in a class level are required. Once you have registered and paid a deposit for the intensive, you will be contacted with instructions for placement auditions. Video auditions will be accepted for those who live outside of the DC area.

Requirements

Students must audition in only one of the disciplines below and must come prepared with the following requirements:

  • Voice - 2 contrasting songs in musical theatre and/or classical voice. Pianist will be provided.
  • Acting - 2 contrasting monologues, contemporary and classical.
  • Dance - 1 minute prepared solo, and taught choreography at audition. Please bring soft dance (jazz) shoes.

Tuition

Cost:

  • $3,145 for Early-Bird Registration before December 31, 2016
  • $3,295 for Regular Registration after January 1, 2017

Payment:

  • A deposit of $500 is due upon registration (refundable until March 1, 2017).
  • 2nd payment of half of the remaining balance is due by April 1, 2016 (non-refundable).
  • Final balance due on June 1, 2017 (non-refundable).

  • All classes, rehearsals and masterclasses with resident and visiting faculty
  • Participation in a full production of In the Heights.

Campus

Sandy Spring Friends School (SSFS) sits on a gorgeous 140-acre wooded campus that includes: academic and administrative buildings, the historic Meeting House, Westview Residence Hall, faculty residences, a top of the line Athletic Center (including a fitness center and rock climbing wall), sports fields, Wildebeest Waterhole (a spring-fed swimming pond complete with water trampoline), and Sandy Spring Adventure Park (the largest zip-line aerial park in North America!).

All Young Artists of America Summer Intensive activities will take place in the brand new, fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center, which features a fully-equipped 300-seat proscenium theater, professional lighting and audio, scene shop, dressing rooms, costume shop, dance studio as well as multiple rehearsal rooms with pianos.

SSFS is located in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland just 30 minutes from Baltimore and Washington, DC and is easily accessible from I-95 and I-270 via the new Intercounty Connector (ICC) MD-200.


Residential Life

Dorms

Overnight students will be housed on campus in Westview Residence Hall in double rooms on single-sex floors. Each suite  has a private bathroom and central air conditioning. The residence hall also features shared lounges as well as faculty housing and a security desk that will be staffed 24 hours a day. The campus features a fully-equipped infirmary that will have a registered nurse on call 24 hours a day.

Meals

The Dining Hall sources much of its food from the on-campus SSFS Community Farm, which supplies the school's food services with fresh organically-grown seasonal produce, including their own lettuce, carrots, kale, chard, and green/yellow wax beans.

Sandy Spring Friends School is an ALLERGY AWARE campus. Children on special diets or in need of special foods will be given individual attention.

Transportation

By Car

Parents of Overnight Students will drop students off at the Sandy Spring Friends School campus on the first day of the intensive and pick them up on the last Friday. Pickup/Dropoff details are available in the Intensives Handbook.

By Air/Train

The nearest Airport and Amtrak train station to the campus is Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). We can make arrangements with families who are coming in from out-of-town for pickup at the BWI airport or train station.
