The Artistic Process

Young Artists of America at Strathmore now offers Studio Classes for middle and high school students to help develop their individual skills in various disciplines, including Acting, Dance, Voice and Musicianship.

Classes are open to enrollment for all students, whether or not they are participating in one of our Performing Ensembles.

Dance

Broadway Dance

Grades 9-12
All levels welcome

Instructor: Dana Keane

Learn specialized technique and exercises that will provide a firm foundation for dancing specific to Musical Theater. Principles of alignment, rhythmic and spatial awareness, flexibility, and strength are investigated as foundations for freedom of expression. Each class will include warm-ups, exercises across the floor, and musical theater dance combos.   

Fall semester will also include musical theatre and rhythm styles of Tap Dance.  Spring semester will include musical theatre Musical Theatre Jazz.

12 Sessions: $347.50 or 24 Sessions: $650

Receive a solid introduction to dance so that you can successfully perform in Musical Theatre numbers. Students will gain a lot of knowledge about the world of dance and how it is a staple of musical theatre. Each class will include warm-ups, exercises across the floor, and musical theater dance combos.

The actor's process

Grades 9-12

Develop and sharpen self-awareness, observation, creative imagination, improvisational skills, and the articulate use of the body and voice. Build and heighten responsiveness to action. Work on monologues and scenes, as well as interpretation of lyrics in songs.

Finding Your Character JR

Grades 5-8

Expand your understanding of “performance” by learning techniques for improving self-confidence in a safe, playful environment through the exploration of introductory acting principles. Students will work on improving focus and concentration, connecting with a others through trust games and active listening, understanding “stage presence,” and opening their imaginations to playing characters.

The Singer's Process

Grades 9-12

Enhance your ability to create unique song interpretations, find your character's arc throughout a song, and explore realistic performance techniques to create bold and vibrant characters. Study the methods a singer takes in preparing repertoire, from choosing the right song, exploring and understanding the lyrics, rhythm and emotion of a song, as well as the vocal preparation required to successfully perform a song.  

12 Sessions: $347.50 or 24 Sessions: $650

Music Theory

Grades 9-12

Become a more interactive and confident musician by learning how to really hear what is going on around you while you are performing. You'll learn to: notate basic rhythms and pitch, understand the relationships between notes by using the solfege method, recognize major/minor scales, modes, and triads, as well as take melodic and rhythmic dictation to gain facility of sight singing.  

10 Sessions (Fall only): $250
